Coordinators are a crucial component to any blood bike group. As a coordinator you take calls from hospitals and then relay the relevant information to the duty rider for him/her to be able to complete the task. The bulk of the work is evening and weekends. Coordinators shift hours differ from group to group so please check with your local Blood bike group for more information..
What is the role of Volunteer Bikers?
Coordinating
Riders
Riders retain the bike at home whilst on duty, during which time he/she is responsible for any job that is called in. It is essential that you have somewhere safe to store the bike and be willing to ride in all weathers (except snow and ice, at your discretion). Before becoming a duty rider you will need to hold an advanced riding qualification (e.g. IAM or RoSPA) if you wish to ride the fleet bikes.
More information on the IAM can be found here: https://www.iamroadsmart.com/
More information on RoSPA can be found Here: https://www.rospa.com/
Blood bike groups also carry out an assessment ride prior to you commencing riding for them and in addition provide an induction on the bikes and related equipment. Please note that some groups have age & riding/driving requirements from the insurance company.
Please check with your local blood bike group for Riders shifts hours & insurance requirements.
Riders are expected to behave responsibly and courteously to other road users. Riders must wear a custom made Hi-Vis Jacket with an ID tag plus suitable safety clothing
Fundraisers
As you might have guessed these services cannot run without the money raised by the members, company donations, anonymous donations and of course, you the generous public. Fund raising is perhaps the most important thing that we do. From shaking a tin to visiting big business to ask for sponsorship.
Fund raising never stops & is vital to keep the charities providing this FREE service to the NHS & HSE.
Please contact your local Blood Bike group for more Information on fundraising.
